DevLog#1 - The journey starts
Welcome to Development Log Number 1!
My name is Chris and I will be your host through this journey.
Premise
Dundel came to the german Godot Server with an idea regarding a small side project - he showed an isometric map with the ability to plow, seed and harvest the grown plant.
Shortly after I took the freedom of simply recreating it in Godot, as I had nothing better on hand to do and needed to polish up my skills for my other big project I’m working on, so I went to Dundel and asked him if he wants to work with me, sending him this implementation of the project.
After some talk with him via Discord we actually think that we may be compatible to work with each other. Dundel wants to take care of game design (with me evaluating them), doing the pixel art, and maybe, if available, doing the sounds effects, and I will take care of prototyping music and the programming.
Motivations
The motivation for the project basically stems from Dundel trying to get more into game design and evaluation (and trying to play with pixel art), aswell as me trying to get a better grip on the Godot Engine to evalute it for future projects and find it’s limits, aswell as supporting others at the official Godot channels. So the main motivation is basically: experimenting. Some things may work, some things may fail, some things may be stupid, but we gotta try them out, you can never say that you tried something until you really do it.
Week 1
In the first week, Dundel found much motivation in mocking up concepts like inventories, shops, UI stuff and much more, despite me having some day-job work to handle. So there are bursts of implementing the drawn assets while finishing the underlaying concepts. We also had to rebrand the project, or rather, giving it a name at all. Pixel Farm, the prefered name, was already taken, so we went with the name “Pixeling Farm” for now. This may be subject to change, but for now, it has a nice ring and it seems to be not taken yet, so… dibs!
I currently implemented the Main Menu, played with the AnimationPlayer, a very mighty tool in Godot, and the loading and saving, so we can actually store game states across game starts.
The Future
I will try to post the these Dev Logs in a weekly fashion, so we can see where this is going. As soon as there is more to report, we will let you know. Currently we are preparing our discord server, so if you want to be one of those “early adopters” make sure to join the server here under this link.
If you got any questions, make sure to leave them below or ask them over at our discord, we’re very open about this process, so everything goes. :-)
Until next time, Chris
